Herbs For Women
by: Nicole Bandes

The other day, I had a female customer bring in her bag of supplements. It was a rather large bag and we started to go through each bottle and what she was using it for. We came across one bottle that she wasn’t sure why she was taking it. I wasn’t really surprised when she said she didn’t know if it was doing her any good since the bottle was an herbal formula designed to support men’s prostate health. Without mentioning the purpose of the product, I asked why she decided to start taking it. She said it was because her uncle said how much good it was doing for him!

It can be difficult to wade through all the herbs that are out there. What ones are good for what and when are they beneficial. It becomes even more complex when we throw all the different herbal formulas and vitamins into the mix. If you are going to use more than one or two natural health products, it is important that you do your own research on each product and the individual ingredients or you consult a natural health coach that can guide you through the process of deciding what to take and how to take it. Of course, even if you do use the service of a trained guide, it is wise to never let anyone be your sole source of information. Whether herbs or drugs, be sure to have a clear understanding of why you are taking what you are and how it may help or hurt you.

For those that would like to learn more about the various natural health supplements, here is a beginner’s guide to herbs for women.

Bayberry – Bayberry may be beneficial to help ease excessive menstrual bleeding.

Black Cohosh – The estrogenic effects of black cohosh have given it a reputation as being beneficial for hot flashes and other pre-menopausal concerns. It may also be beneficial during childbirth to stimulate contractions, help control hemorrhaging and afterbirth pains. This herb should not be used except in the last 4 to 6 weeks of pregnancy and only under the guidance of an experienced midwife or doctor as it may cause damage to the unborn fetus.

Blessed Thistle – This herb, similar to Milk Thistle, is generally used to strengthen the liver. However the benefits to women include balancing hormones, enriching breast milk, reducing breast inflammation and unclogging milk ducts.

Blue Cohosh – Blue Cohosh stimulates uterine contractions and relaxes muscle spasms making it beneficial during childbirth. This herb should not be used except in the last 6 weeks of pregnancy and only under the guidance of an experienced midwife or doctor as it may cause damage to the unborn fetus.

Dong Quai – This Chinese herb has been used extensively in Chinese medicine to treat female concerns. It is a general tonic, meaning that it is good for several different female conditions including PMS, regulation of menses and infertility.

False Unicorn – Historically, False Unicorn has been used to stop a pending miscarriage.

Ginger – This herb is commonly used for digestive disturbances and may be beneficial for morning sickness during pregnancy.

Maca – Beneficial for men and women, this herb has been used to increase sexual desire.

Parsley – When it is time to wean your little one from breast feeding, parsley can be used to dry up the breast milk.

Red Raspberry – Rich in manganese, this herb can be used to tone and strengthen the uterus and regulate the female organs. Extremely beneficial for teenage girls and their families during this rollercoaster phase of emotions.

Many of these herbs have been used for centuries to support female health. While there may not be scientific research to support their use, they are generally considered safe when used as directed. Due to the state of our health care system, it is now important to begin taking on the role of being our own.

Speed Up Your Weight Loss With Herbs And Spices by:
Marie K Gordon
I wonder how much it is generally known that the benefits of using herbs and spices can speed up your weight loss efforts, by quite a considerable amount actually.
We all know that herbs and spices are used with cooking to varying degrees, and of course the primary reason for doing so is to make food much more tasty and interesting.

I suspect however that you might be surprised at the considerable health benefits that can also be gained by using them. In saying this I am referring to those everyday items that can be found in most larders, and not necessarily those exotic and probably not so well known varieties.

I happened to discover the many benefits of herbs and spices and the fact that they can be most beneficial to a weight loss program, when I was doing extremely detailed research for my latest book.

The results of that research were so extensive, that it could be the basis in itself for a complete publication, and much more detailed therefore, than I could possibly include in this short article.
However I have been able to include a fair amount of information below about various herbs and spices which are known to particularly help to speed up weight loss, and that is also in addition to their excellent overall health benefits by the way.

You should find that you will be able to purchase these herbs from any good Herbalist supplier.

Garcinia: (Garcinia cambogia) is a herb which is sold primarily for enhancing weight loss and boosting the amount of lean muscle. This is also known as hila or brindell berry. One of the major benfits of Garcinia is that it acts as an appetite suppressant and stops the body from storing fat.

Pysillium: (Plantago spp.) This cheeky little herb has quite a few health benefits. Physillium is known to help lower cholesterol, and another major benefit is that it also helps to prevent constipation. If you use it as part of your weight loss program, it can help you to eat less calories and yet still feel really full.
This is because of the amount of fiber that it contains.
I mentioned earlier that it does help in preventing constipation, but in order to achieve this you should make sure that you drink plenty of water.

Siberian Gingsing: (Eleutherococcus senticosus) If you are going to start regular exercise as part of your health and weight loss routine, which is normally to be highly recommended, then this is a really useful herb.
It can help your body adapt to the stress of unaccustomed changes, and it will help to make you feel less tired even when you are doing simple exercises like walking for example.
So in turn therefore you are more likely to stick to your exercise routine.

Little Known Secrets In Your Larder

Cayenne: (also known as Capsicum, hot pepper, chilli pepper, tabasco pepper). The majority of us have cayenne in our larders, and it is very commonly used in many food dishes. Cayenne can be found in many forms such as ground spices, teas, and would you believe it, topical creams.
It is well known for its antitoxidant action, and greatly helps with osteoathritis and rhumatoid athritis, shingles, and diabetic neuropathy.

A note of caution however: Cayenne may act with anticoagulant drugs so be sure to consult with your doctor. Excessive use may also irritate the intestinal tract.
Manufactured topical capsacin creams can cause a burning sensation, so test first on a small area of the skin, remembering to wash hands thoroughly after applying the cream. This will avoid it spreading to the eyes nose or other sensitive areas.

Fennel: is native to the Mediterranean and is widely utilized throughout the world. You will find it in teas, capsules, tinctures and lozenges. Fennel can be used to help with bloating, flatulence, mild digestive spasms, catarrh, and coughs. It also has antimicrobal, antispadmodic, and anti inflammatory properties.

A note of caution here: Fennel can sometimes cause rare allergic skin and respiratory tract reactions. Fennel is also a potential source of synthetic oestrogens and should be avoided if you are pregnant.

Garlic: you can buy this fresh, or the one you will most probably have in your larder will be dried. The downside of garlic is the odour which it leaves on your breath, but chewing some parsley after eating will soon sort out that problem.
Garlic is also known to help stimulate the immune system, and to help in fighting cancer. Well documented health benefits include lowering cholesterol, fighting infections, and reducing blood pressure.

Again a note of caution: garlic may also interact with anticoaglant drugs, so do be sure to check with your doctor if in any doubt. Rare cases of allergic reactions are known, and some people might possibly experience heartburn or even flatulence.
These are just a few of the herbs you can use in cooking, but do remember that there are many many more, and the benefits in using them frequently can be quite remarkable.
You will realize of course that when using them as part of any dish to use them sparingly, as to add too much would just spoil the meal.

As with everything in life one should try and strike a balance, after all you know what they say "all things in moderation".

Ways to Combat Fatigue
QualityBooks.com

Fatigue is a sensation we all experience, at least to some degree. It may be the feeling of being wiped out at the end of a busy day at work or a long day at some recreational activity. Fatigue of this kind usually responds to a good night's rest and is gone in the morning. More significantly, fatigue may be chronic, the feeling of being mentally and physically tired all the time. Long lasting fatigue is so overwhelming that sometimes you are all but bedridden. This sort of fatigue may be associated with illness, often with severe illness.

Chronic fatigue is a common medical complaint whose cause is often very difficult to diagnose according to many doctors. And it may be a symptom of countless medical conditions, such as an underactive thyroid gland, diabetes, mononucleosis, lyme disease, or anemia. However, chronic fatigue - a daily lack of energy - is very often a result of circumstances and lifestyle choices. If your doctor has found no underlying reason for your fatigue, taking a long, hard look at those circumstances and choices is in order.

A good night's sleep leaves you energized and alert in the morning and plays a big role in your overall health and well being. No one is certain why this is so. Some researchers suggest that sleep gives your body tissues time to recover from daily wear and tear, others that it restores brain function. A bad night, on the other hand, leave you with slower reaction times, poorer concentration, and a smaller pool of energy from which to draw the next day. People vary widely in their sleeping patterns: Some feel rested after five hours' sleep, others need nine or 10. And sleep-wake patterns change as you age, with elderly people experiencing more wakefulness during the night than they did when younger. If you wake up feeling tired and are not comfortably alert during the day, you are not getting the sleep your body needs.

Exercise also has a bearing on your health and now many experts believe that exercise may be the best way to stave off fatigue. Vigorous activity is energizing because it wakes up the nervous system and speeds up the metabolic rate. A fast metabolic rate ensures a good supply of energy leaving a person feeling less fatigued, not only during the exercise session but for up to eight hours afterward. Over the long term, exercise leads to physical fitness, the stamina to do more and endure more without fatigue.

Another factor that may contribute to fatigue is poor eating habits. What you eat and when you eat it can have profound effects on your energy level throughout the day. Food is our source of fuel and of essential vitamins and minerals. Carbohydrates provide the body's preferred fuel: glucose. A diet rich in complex carbohydrates such as grains, cereals, and starchy vegetables provides the best staying power because these foods are digested slowly. Simple sugars in candy or cookies on the other hand, can cause a sudden surge of glucose in the blood, quickly followed by a drop in blood sugar and a feeling of tiredness.

In addition to providing fuel for the body's cells, food triggers the release of certain chemical messengers, or neurotransmitters, in the brain either to energize or to calm us. You should plan your individual meals to work in your favor. For instance, a good balanced breakfast will boost your energy during the morning. A high-protein lunch lays the groundwork for a productive afternoon, and a high-carbohydrate dinner will prepare you for a sound night's sleep and the replenishment of your energy pool.
How You Can Use Acupressure, the Japanese Finger Pressure Method, as a Tool in Dieting

Believe it or not, your fingers can be vital tools in your war against extra weight. By means of Japanese acupressure, the finger pressure method, you can shed up to seven pounds a week.

Although this sounds too good to be true, it's not. After learning this simple, drug-free method of hunger reduction, you'll be able to eat what you like. And you'll lose weight because you'll find you don't want to eat huge amounts any more.

The basis of acupressure is that there are key points on your body which are in direct relation to the hunger center of your brain. By simply massaging these points with your fingertips when you get the binging urge, you'll stop these urges from reaching your brain.

The key pressure point for dulling appetite is midway between your upper lip and nose. Before each meal, place thumb inside lip and index finger outside lip and massage 10 seconds. Apply moderate pressure; massage the pressure point up and down.

If you find your appetite perks up when you are under a great deal of stress or perhaps when you're depressed, you will need to learn a couple of other acupressure techniques.

If you are about to binge because you are depressed, try massaging the point just below the root of the nail on the little finger of your left hand. Start on the ring-finger side of the little finger and massage with your right hand toward the outside of the little finger for 10 seconds.

If your appetite increases due to stress, massage the point two finger widths below the knuckle at the base of the index finger and half a finger width toward the thumb. Massage the point on both hands with your thumb.

Finally, if you get that hollow, hungry feeling at the pit of your stomach, massage the point halfway between your navel and breastbone in a circular motion for 10 seconds with your thumb. The hunger pangs should subside right away.

Finger pressure is the final breakthrough in weight loss. Finally, you can shed the weight you want to using a fast, simple and healthy method.
Seven Ways to Unlock Your Brainpower
QualityBooks.com

Ayurveda, the ancient system of healing from India, describes three aspects to mental performance -- "dhi" -- learning and comprehension, "dhriti" -- retention of knowledge, and "smriti" -- memory or recall. "For the best mental performance and realization of the fullest mental potential, each of these three factors individually needs to be at its peak, and, more important, the co- ordination among the three factors also needs to be optimal," says Rama Kant Mishra, Ayurvedic expert. Ayurveda recommends paying attention to the three fundamental pillars of good health - diet, sleep and lifestyle -- to achieve this state of mental balance. Here are some tips from Mishra to help boost brainpower:

Eat pure, "intelligent" foods "According to Ayurveda, it is very important to eat foods that are natural and pure for their full benefit to be absorbed by the body," says Mishra. When foods are as close to their state in nature as possible, that's when they deliver the most potent nutrition. Foods that have been genetically altered, processed or refined have much of their natural intelligence stripped from them, and Mishra contends that they disturb the intellect and the co-ordination between the three aspects of mental prowess -- comprehension, retention and recall. Also taboo are foods that are canned or preserved with artificial additives and preservatives, or foods with artificial colors and flavors. "Cooking with fresh, organic ingredients can take a little more time and effort," agrees Mishra. "But your brain, and indeed your entire system will thank you for it and repay the effort with accelerated performance."

Maintain a supply of balanced nutrition

The recommended Ayurvedic diet is vegetarian. "Grains, beans and legumes provide nutrients for the brain," says Mishra. "Be sure to include plenty of cooked leafy greens. Several helpings of fruit and vegetables are recommended. Sweet juicy fruits are excellent cleansers - they help flush toxins out of the body. Don't count fat out entirely, fat performs some essential functions in the body, including the brain." Mishra suggests cutting down on "empty" junk foods and sugared drinks that interfere with the absorption of nutrients by the body. According to Ayurveda, good eating habits are as important as what you eat. Sitting down to eat, focusing on the food rather than on work or other activities, and savoring the meal are important. Ice-cold drinks disrupt digestion and impair the assimilation of nutrients by the body, and should therefore be avoided.

Harness the power of antioxidantsThe brain is especially susceptible to damage by free radicals, reactive oxygen-based chemicals that thrive on stress, pollution and chemicals in your food. Free radicals have been widely linked to disease and aging. Antioxidants are therefore crucial for effective functioning of the brain. Recent research showed that blueberries are powerful brain food, primarily because of their antioxidant value. Ayurvedic antioxidant supplements contain Amalaki, the Indian gooseberry, considered the richest natural source of vitamin C, along with other herbs. Look for an antioxidant that works both inside and outside cell walls for full-spectrum protection from free radical damage.

Use herbs and aromas to enhance mental potentialAyurveda talks about a special class of herbs for the mind, called "Medhya" herbs. "These herbs individually enhance learning, retention and recall as well as the co-ordination among the three factors," says Mishra. "They provide powerful nourishment for the brain." Shankhapushpi or Aloeweed, the authentic Brahmi or Herpestis monniera and Indian Pennywort or Centella asiatica, also known as Gotu Kola, are some well-known Ayurvedic herbs known to promote the health and functioning of the mind. "Synergistic formulas that contain not only these herbs but other supporting and balancing herbs such as Ashwagandha (Winter Cherry) to help boost resistance to stress are ideal," suggests Mishra, "especially for individuals in high-stress job environments who need to be at the peak of their mental potential on a consistent basis." Some essential oils are excellent aromatherapy for the mind. Try rosemary for mental clarity and alertness or basil oil to help dispel mental fatigue and enhance your mind's innate ability to focus. Peppermint oil and lemon oil are also effective pick-me-ups for the mind.

Manage stress levelsStress and anxiety, whether caused by time pressure or difficult work relationships, can have a significant negative impact on mental performance. A calm mind, serene and centered in its equilibrium, is unquestionably superior in terms of focus, attention span, retention of knowledge and problem-solving ability. "It is important to manage stress before it becomes a severe problem," says Mishra, "because stress has been known to damage or destroy brain cells and many prescription pills for anxiety can have side-effects that can further erode mental performance." Planning tasks ahead and managing timelines, taking occasional short (even five minutes) breaks during periods of intense mental activity, and maintaining a healthy balance between work and relaxation can all help. The Transcendental Meditation technique, or other relaxation techniques are also useful in managing stress. Listening to relaxing music, diffusing aromas that help relax you, such as sandalwood or lavender, or a quiet evening stroll, alone or with a nurturing companion, can all help balance the mind and emotions.

Get adequate, quality sleepRelated to stress is the other plague of modern society - lack of deep, restful sleep. "With diet and lifestyle, sleep is a fundamental pillar of Ayurveda," says Mishra. "Optimal physical and mental performance is impossible if all three of these factors are not addressed." Getting eight hours of sleep is less important than striving for quality sleep, which, according to Ayurveda, occurs when the mind is totally disconnected from the senses. Quality sleep recharges and rejuvenates the mind, improving both short-term and long-term mental prowess. Mishra advises a daily warm oil full-body massage to increase stamina during the day and promote quality sleep at night. Cutting down on stimulants such as caffeine, alcohol and nicotine; making work-related materials taboo in the bedroom and winding down the evening with calming activities, instead of stimulating ones, to help prepare the mind for restful sleep; are key to getting your zzzs. Aromatherapy can also help - try a blend of lavender, chamomile, jasmine and sweet orange, or just plain lavender.

Use it or lose it!No matter what your age or your occupation; your brain needs to be constantly challenged to be at its peak in terms of performance. "Whether it's doing logic puzzles, memorizing lines from Shakespeare, or learning a new skill, keep your brain busy," advises Mishra, "if you don't want it to rust away like a car in a junkyard." Asking questions to clarify things in your mind, visualization techniques and associative memory games can keep the brain nimble.

Apples Will Keep You Happy
QualityBooks.com

Researchers now tell us that grandma was right when she said an apple a day would keep the doctor away! The apple is now being called the all-round health food.

Nutritionists suggest that eating two or three apples a day can boost the body's protection against heart disease, thanks to the fruit's amazing ability to reduce blood pressure and lower dangerously high cholesterol levels. In fact, they say, the higher the cholesterol, the greater the benefits will be if you increase your consumption of apples.

Apples are known for many potent healing powers and they contain chemicals scientists believe may fight certain types of cancer. The reason appears to be that apples are loaded with natural acids that have successfully blocked cancer formation in laboratory studies.

Remember that to get the best health benefit, you have to eat the whole thing, skin and all. The skin contains the high level of pectin fiber, which seems to be the basis for the fruit's amazing power to lower cholesterol or blood pressure, balance blood sugar content and fight off cancer.

Apples are an excellent food source for diabetics and others who need to control blood sugar levels. They rank high among foods that best control blood sugar. Even though the apple is a rich source of natural sugar, something about its content does not cause a rapid, often dangerous rise in blood sugar. also, it prevents the body from pumping out too much insulin which, in turn, helps bring down blood cholesterol and blood pressure.

Whole apples (as opposed to just the juice) are great for dieters. They suppress appetite without robbing the body of necessary nutrients. The rise in blood glucose levels that occurs when you eat an apple makes you feel fuller.

Apple juice also helps keep you healthy and helps the healing process - especially if you're suffering from colds or viruses. People who eat apples regularly have far fewer colds and upper respiratory problems. And researchers have noted that apple eaters also suffered far fewer stress-related illnesses.

The apple may also be the only healing food capable of taking care of two opposite complaints at the same time - constipation and diarrhea.

First apples or applesauce have been used for centuries to help people get back on a regular diet after suffering bouts of diarrhea. The pectin in the apple fiber apparently is the healing factor, which explains why it is included in one of the popular over-the-counter diarrhea remedies. Also, that same fiber is what dietitians have been telling us for decades is necessary to keep us regular and to prevent constipation.

Finally, apples are not only a super healing food, but, as nature's original toothbrushes, they may even prevent cavities, a fact that many of our ancestors probably learned through trial and error, but that modern day researchers have confirmed in the laboratory.

One group of scientists doing a recent study found that apples actually helped clean teeth among a control group of children and therefore significantly cut down on the risk of tooth decay.
The Wonders of Garlic
QualityBooks.com

Volumes could be written about the wonders of garlic. It has been recognized for centuries for its medicinal qualities as well as for flavoring and enhancing foods. And now, medical science is linking its use to lower blood pressure and are finding garlic acts to lower blood cholesterol.

Garlic can be an aid against heart attacks because it contains an oil which interferes with the formation of blood clots. If a clot does form, garlic has an ingredient to help dissolve it, and so minimize damage.

Garlic is defined as a bulbous plant of the lily family. It is a strong smelling bulb, made up of small sections called cloves. This distinctive herb should not be confined merely to food preparation because it has many other uses. That's not to say that it doesn't perk up many food dishes and salad dressing. You can try it with practically any soup, and garlic butter will make any bread or roll better. Many vegetable dishes are enhanced by a sprinkle or two of garlic salt.

Garlic has long been recognized for opening up the air passages to enable more freer breathing during sinus attacks, colds and flu. If you can, you might like to grow your own fresh garlic and store it for your own food and medicinal needs. Garlic is always available at your super markets and health food stores.

Some people tend to be extra cautious when it comes to using the herb, garlic. And in fact, the many uses for garlic are still being explored, both in the field of medicine as well as in preparing various foods.

When you consider the medicinal use of garlic in your home remedies, you might also explore the possibilities of livening up some of those tired old recipes and bring smiles to the faces of your family at meal-time.

For a good cough and cold syrup, you can simmer a generous handful of garlic cloves in water until very soft. Mash the garlic and add an equal amount of honey. Then stir in a tablespoon of vinegar.

You can slice a bit of fresh garlic into fried foods to help lessen their artery clogging effects. Old-timers recommend that we eat garlic every day for a healthy heart and to live a longer life.

Prevent infection by wrapping minor abrasions with a soft moss, soaked in garlic juice. Mash up some fresh garlic cloves and rub it on broken skin. It will encourage healing and help discourage infection. Children fed regularly with garlic will not develop worms.

To ease a nagging cough, sip on the juice of raw garlic cloves. This works best when sweetened with honey and flavored with caraway. Garlic is recommended to treat the distress of respiratory infections with hot soup, laced with sliced garlic.

A light broth, rich in garlic, will soothe gas pains. Garlic is also a fine dressing for salads when used with oil and vinegar and may also be made into various vinaigrette dressings in combination with other herbs and spices.

Eat a clove of garlic each day to relieve dizziness. And chew a bit of parsley after you eat foods containing garlic so that it will moderate your breath.

Garlic is used daily in homes around the world. It is prized for the taste and flavor it adds to foods as well as being recognized for its medicinal qualities. It is most definitely a vermifuge, antiseptic, diaphoretic, diuretic, stimulant and expectorant. It is also said to have great value when applied as a topical ointment to skin conditions such as acne or other types of pimples.

Ancient Egyptians ate garlic and it is said that the great tombs of the Egyptian pharaohs could not have been built but for the strength the Israelites gained from their daily ration of garlic and onion. Garlic was a symbol of the cosmos as manifested by its successive layers of skin that form the bulb. The Greeks and the Romans also ate of this magical herb. They used it as a health protector and aphrodisiac.

Garlic is used internally to protect a body from disease and externally as an antiseptic to protect the skin form germs and disease. A couple of interesting and useful garlic recipes are listed below:

GARLIC SOUP
If you have a cold, you can substitute this unique garlic soup for the traditional chicken broth. Recipe yields 4 to 6 servings.
Ingredients:1 garlic bulb, coarsely chopped2 tsp. olive oil4 c. hearty chicken broth2 - 4 egg yolks, beaten1/2

Saute the chopped garlic in the olive oil until translucent and tender. It is not necessary to peel the individual cloves. Add the chicken broth. Bring to a slow boil, then reduce the heat and simmer gently until the garlic is mushy, usually about 30 minutes. Put through a strainer into a small pot. Add the beaten egg yolks slowly, stirring all the while. Return to the heat until thickened. When all is incorporated, serve hot or chilled. You'll find it to be delicious either way.

GARLICKED HONEY
Ingredients: Garlic cloves, Honey

Peel garlic cloves and put them in a jar. Add honey, a little at a time over a couple of days until the jar is full. Set in a warm window for 2 weeks to a month or until the garlic has turned somewhat opaque and all the garlic flavor has been transferred to the honey. This garlic honey is an excellent cough syrup. Just take a teaspoonful every couple of hours or whenever it seems necessary. You must remember though, that the honey has a lot of concentrated garlic power in it and one teaspoonful can represent many cloves of garlic. If you are giving this syrup to a child, you should dilute each spoonful with a bit of water. Garlic honey also soothes a sore throat. As an application for acne or herpes it has no equal because it is both healing, soothing and slightly anesthetic. Some cooks like to baste their chicken with this garlic honey mixture.

What To Do If A Loved One Seems Depressed
By Arthur Buchanan

Depression can take on many faces depending upon the person, their age, and their gender. Overall, the best thing to be aware of is a significant change in activity or behavior.

Depression In Teens

Depression in teenagers can be difficult to identify, as their mood cycles are traditionally erratic. In general, females tend to suffer from depression more than males, but don’t overlook a young male whose behavior has changed. Again, the things to look out for are marked changes in behavior. If the teen tends to be social and there has been a significant reduction in their social activities, than that might be an indication that he or she is depressed.
Is the phone ringing a lot less? Have they become more withdrawn from the family? Are they sleeping excessively but still seeming to be tired a lot? It’s also not unusual for them to be especially irritable and cranky. Tearfulness is yet another sign. Grades in school often decline as the teen becomes more distracted and less attentive.
Drug use is also a concern for teens that are depressed as it is for anyone suffering from this problem because people often medicate their depression with alcohol and /or drugs to try to feel better.

Depression in Adults

Adults tend to hide their depression a little better than kids. They have learned how to put a mask on and act as if everything is fine, even when it is not. Appetite is often a strong indicator. The loss of appetite is most common, however there are those who sooth themselves with food so, in that case, you would expect to see a weight gain. Sexual appetite is another variable that is often identified. Depression puts a damper on sexual desire. Essentially when a person stops doing those activities that they used to enjoy, there is a good chance that depression can be a factor.

Depression In The Elderly

The elderly suffer from depression a lot more than is reported. The older generation still feels a lot of shame and embarrassment about mental illnesses. The harsh reality of the elderly is that their friends are dying on a regular basis. These losses bring up many different feelings, ranging from loneliness and loss to the realization that their time is also limited. Withdrawal is a common sign, as well as weight loss, fatigue and irritability. It is critical to have the elderly evaluated by a competent gerontologist (a doctor who specializes in the older population) to rule out worrisome medical concerns.

Discussing Suicide
When a family member is discovered to be depressed, there is often a reluctance to be direct and straight forward with them. Often people think what if I ask the person if they feel like they want to end their life, and I have gotten them thinking about suicide when they hadn’t previously considered it?
That will never happen. If a person is severely depressed, they will most likely have given some thought to ending their life. Vague, passing thoughts about suicide are normal for everyone at one time or another. What you need to be worried about is if a person has actually constructed a plan to end their life. Another phenomenon to watch out for is if someone who had been previously very depressed suddenly seems to be fine, happy, and starts giving their possessions away. Do not be fooled into thinking that this person has made a spontaneous recovery.
So, if someone takes a sudden turn for the better and starts giving things away, or if someone talks to you about having a specific plan to end their life, you MUST take action. These are definitely cases of it being better to err on the side of caution. Let the person know that you are concerned about them, and ask that they speak with a mental health professional.
You might offer to get an appointment for them and then take them to the appointment. If they refuse treatment, it is essential that you contact a mental health professional and seek their advice. You can search the internet, the phone book, or call information to get the number for your community mental health center. Most community mental health centers have an emergency clinician on call 24 hours a day to assist in such an emergency. Do not leave the person alone until they have been evaluated and it has been determined that they are able to be left without supervision. People often feel concerned about upsetting the person by pushing for evaluation or treatment. The most important thing here is to prevent a suicide.
Even if the person is initially angry, once their depression lifts they will be forever grateful that you intervened on their behalf. Depression is a life threatening illness. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Imagine this, a person feels so miserable that they decide they can’t take feeling this badly for another minute. But the good news is that the vast majority of people suffering from depression will recover and continue to have normal lives.
Don’t be afraid to talk about depression. Don’t be afraid of tears. There is help available for everyone. Most community mental health centers receive state and federal funds so they have the opportunity to provide treatment and no or low cost. Everyone today can find some kind of treatment if they need it.

Quit Smoking With Nature's Help

Smoking is very dangerous to your health. Most smokers feel that there is nothing that they haven't tried in order to quit. However, they may not be aware of the many natural means available which others have used to finally end this very destructive habit. It is possible to quit smoking, if you devise a plan, cleanse and support the body and use natural methods to curb nicotine cravings.
Most, if not all, people in the United States believe that smoking is unhealthy. Why then do people smoke? The answer lies in the addictive nature of nicotine. Over 80 percent of smokers declare that they want to quit and plan to do so at some point. Even heroin addicts admit that nicotine is truly the hardest drug habit to kick. (Haas, p.964)
Almost one-third of cases of pancreatic carcinoma can be attributed to cigarette smoking. Most lung cancers are caused by cigarette smoking. (Smokers are five to ten times more likely to suffer from lung cancer than nonsmokers). The more cigarettes you smoke per day and the earlier you started smoking, the greater the risk of lung cancer.
Children of smokers have an increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome, respiratory infections and lung cancer.
"Children of smokers have a much higher incidence and severity of asthma, bronchitis, colds and ear infections. They also have impaired lung development and reduced lung function tests." American Journal of Public Health, p. 209, Feb. 1989)
vitamin supplement daily, you may feel that you are generally healthy. However, if you smoke, this is typically not the case. Heavy smokers do not get as much of a benefit from a healthy diet. Blood levels of Vitamin C are much lower in smokers. Zinc, Vitamin A and folic acid are often depleted in the bodies of smokers.
Now that we have covered just a few of the negative effects of smoking on the body, let's figure out how to quit - and without drugs! It may come as a surprise to you that there is a way to be free of this horrible addiction without using prescription medication for help.
Let's now cover some ideas on how to actually go about quitting.
Have you tried to quit before and failed? Did you quit for awhile and then start again? You may feel that because you tried and failed, that it proves that you can't quit. However, this is not the case. In reality, you get points each time you attempt to quit. You inevitably learned something each time you tried, which gets you that much closer to being successful in quitting. Most quitters did not do it on their first try. So just think of it as your "practice" run! (3)
A main part of your quit smoking plan, is to figure out which interventions you will use when you are hit with a craving to smoke. Try to avoid being around other smokers. Learn some deep breathing exercises that you can use to de-stress. Exercise is also a great way to limit stress and keep you busy.
Something to consider once you have decided to quit smoking, is how to get the toxins out of your body. One theory is that many dependencies originate in the liver. Cleansing and detoxifying the liver is a crucial first step toward breaking free of these addictions. Detoxifying the liver will reduce the cravings for nicotine. (ESP, p. 279)
You can use echinacea to help flush the nicotine out of the lymph system and lungs. Vitamin C is a great chelator of toxic substances in the body. (Which means it will "grab" the offenders and flush them out through the waste system). A usual dose of C is 1000 mg four times per day. N-Acetyl-cysteine 1000 mg, two doses of glutamine 1000 mg, four capsules of Evening Primrose Oils and 20 Sun Wellness Chlorella tabs are a good regimine for removing nicotine toxicity from the body. (Page p. 548)
It is important during your detox and quitting time that you "avoid junk foods and sugar that aggravate cravings" (Page p.548) Ginseng can help you to normalize sugar cravings, as can stevia, stevioside or FOS. Trace mineral and mineral deficiencies can play a part in some addictions. Magnesium, potassium, calcium and zinc should all be included in the diet when trying to quit smoking. (ESP, p.279)
The main concern when quitting tobacco are the cravings! There are many choices when it comes to this issue. Essential oils, vitamins and herbal teas are all on the list of items in the "cravings" category.
Eating a diet which promotes body alkalinity is said to show less desire for tobacco. To calm your nerves, try Magnesium 800 mg daily, stress B-complex 100 mg daily, valerian/wild lettuce drops in water. (Page, p.548) Young Living Essential Oils offers a blend called "Peace and Calming" which, some people have reported, was all they needed during their quitting time.
Oil of clove is also reported by many people to be extremely effective in their war with nicotine cravings. In Stanley Burroughâs Master Cleanser book, he states "For those who wish to quit smoking, place a small amount (of clove oil) on your finger - place it on back of the tongue and you immediately lose your desire to smoke. This is an easy way if you really want to quit." Peppermint oil has also been reported to be effective. Just a touch of it on the tongue, in the same manner as you apply the clove oil will do it.
Single oils which may be helpful in smoking cessation in addition to clove and peppermint, are cinnamon and nutmeg. Other blends of oils recommended for reducing addictive behavior are Harmony, Thieves, Exodus II, Peace and Calming, JuvaCleanse and JuvaFlex. These can be directly inhaled or diffused, applied topically on the temples and/or back of the neck four times daily, or used as a warm compress over the liver.
Quitting smoking is not an easy task to undertake. However, if you give your body the right tools, you can repair the damage done by smoking, you can reduce your cravings and YOU CAN QUIT! Try some of these simple, natural and effective helpers. Nature is the best medicine, so believe in yourself and watch it happen!!

Six Causes of Hair Loss In Women
#1. Hair loss in women is often connected to pregnancy. Three to six months after delivering a child, many women notice a degree of hair loss as the hair goes into a resting phase because of the physiological impact of the pregnancy on the body.
#2. A woman's body can also be greatly affected by intensive diets and losing a lot of weight in a short period of time.
#3. Severe illnesses and infections can put great stress on the body thus triggering the hair into a resting phase which result hair shedding. Often the body recovers naturally within 3 to 9 months and the hair begins to regrow until it almost resembles its original condition.
#4. Hair loss in women can be aggravated further by improper use of chemical hair treatments such as dyes, tints, bleaches, straighteners, and permanent waves. Generally, healthy hair can undergo these treatments without showing signs of stress, if they are not done too often. However, if hair is breaking or if it becomes brittle it is best to stop these procedures until the hair has grown out.
#5. The constant pulling of hair with styles such as ponytails and braids can sometimes cause Hair loss in women. Avoid pulling the hair tight with these styles.
#6. Rough combing and brushing of the hair and vigorous rubbing with a towel after shampooing can cause it to break, adding further to the problem of Hair loss in women. Wide toothed combs and brushes with smooth tips are recommended to minimize hair breakage.

Herbs For Breast Enhancement
By Anchalee Saechin

Women are often not happy with their breast size. Usually they would like larger breasts. Women are increasingly turning to breast implant surgery and other alternatives, such as herbal breast enhancement.

Herbal breast enhancement uses a variety of herbs to stimulate breast growth. Though all are different, there are several commonly used herbs. Herbal breast enhancement can utilize pills, creams, or liquids. Some companies even offer a spray. The herbs used in the different forms of herbal breast enhancement vary, but generally include Saw Palmetto, Damiana, Dong Quai, Blessed Thistle, Wild Yam, and Fennel Seed.

When considering herbal breast enhancement, do your homework. You should know that herbal breast enhancement doesn't have the immediate results of implant surgery. On the other hand, there are no scars, pain, or recovery time to deal with. Make sure you know the ingredients in any herbal breast enhancement supplement you are considering. Research the ingredients for safety and effectiveness, and consider other options if you tend to be allergic to herbs. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any medications. Once you are satisfied that you have found the right product, check the company. The best companies let you know what herbal breast enhancement can do and also tells you when it is not advisable to take certain herbs. For example, some herbal breast enhancement products should not be used if you are pregnant.

If you are uncomfortable with the size of your breasts, herbal breast enhancement offers the opportunity to change this without surgery. Maybe it's time to start looking at herbal breast enhancement.

Herbal Medicine
Ken Shorey

Herbal Medicine is the use of botanicals (plants) either alone
or in combination to prevent and treat certain ailments and
illnesses. Singularly or in combination, the numbers of herbs
available is astounding. There are over a half million known herbs that could be used as possible remedies.

Herbal remedies around the globe vary in strength from very mild, gentle remedies that we even use as food, to potential poisons if taken at the wrong dose. The old adage that, "anounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" could not be more true. This is especially true when it comes to natural remedies.

People native to different geographical locations have long used plants and plant extracts to cure specific maladies.

Sometimes the use of herbs is referred to as "folk" medicine.Folk use of herbal remedies is familiar to all of us in some form or another, because this is how these remedies are learned. Remedies and recipes for herbal teas are handed down from generation to generation and are still remembered and used to this day. Unfortunately, that is what fuels the fire of the scientific community and their disdain. It really is their loss, because generations of experience and knowledge should not be so readily dismissed. In fact, many of our modern medicines have their roots in herbal medicine.

With all our so-called advancements in the medical field, it’s interesting that physicians are still treating "effect" rather than "cause."

Thankfully, the current changes in the world toward traditional remedies is changing for the better.

Stevia the Sweetener Herb
by Monica Resinger

While shopping for vegetable garden plants at our local homestore last night, I was elated to find the sweetener herb Stevia! After wegot home, I picked a leaf, took a nibble and was shocked at how sweet it really was.

In an effort to learn a little more about this plant, I did a web search andwill share with you what I learned.

Stevia Rebaudiana is a small perennial shrub which belongs to theChrysanthemum family. This plant is the only known species thathas the ability to sweeten.

Stevia in its natural herb form is 10 to 15 times sweeter thangranulated sugar. Here are some wonderful benefits of using Stevia:

~It's diabetic safe
~It's calorie free
~It does not adversely affect blood sugar
~It is non toxic
~Inhibits the formation of cavities and plaque
~It can be used for cooking

Growing it:It's best to start with plants because it is difficult to growfrom seed.

Young Stevia plants are sensitive to low temperatures, so don'tplant it out until danger of frost is gone and soil temperature is in the 50'sor 60's.

They should be planted 18 inches apart. They grow to about 30 inchestall and 18 inches wide. It likes a rich soil and its feeder roots are nearthe soil surface, so adding a mulch of compost is a good idea. Stevia roots aresensitive to excessive moisture, so be sure the soil drains easily. It is aperennial, but the plant is sensitive to frost, so don't leave it outside throughthe fall and winter months if your area gets frosts.

What Is Herbal Medicine? Is It Safe?
Charlene J. Nuble

Herbal medicine is the use of plant and herb extracts for their therapeutic value. Most plants contain and produce chemical substances that aid in healing and other physical treatments.

Herbal medicine is the oldest form of healthcare and constitutes a key role in the development of modern medicine as we know it today. Back when technology was still unheard of,primitive men utilized the vast flora around them to thefullest extent, observing both plant and animal life and their components, eventually giving birth to herbal medicine. In a study by the World Health Organization on herbal medicine use, about 80% of the world's populace still rely on herbal medicine to cure certain ailments and about 74% of the drugs we use today contain at least one botanical element. For instance, Chinese Herbal Medicine's use of ephedrine to cure respiratory conditions still exists in the present time. Ephedrine remains an active ingredient in most of the commercial drugs that are being prescribed to relieve asthma symptoms.

Herbal medicine is defined by three schools of thought:Ayurvedic Herbalism, Traditional Chinese Herbalism and WesternHerbal Medicine. While both Ayurvedic and Chinese herbal medicine have moved on to advanced forms, western herbalmedicine remains a part of folk treatments. Herbal medicine is,first and foremost, holistic. It aims to address not just a particular symptom, but also to help the whole body rejuvenate strengthen itself. And while there is no scientific evidence that all herbal medicines claiming to have healing powers are actually effective, the number the herbal medicines that have been placed under clinical testing have proved their worth. The list of known kinds includes echinacea, which is used to tempercolds, St John's wort, used to treat mild depression (withoutusing Prozac), and hawthorne berries, which help in the recovery process from mild heart failures.

Is herbal medicine a direct substitute to modern medication? It depends. While herbal medicines are extracted naturally fromplants, not all are safe to use; particularly if they are taken with other types of treatments that may not be complementary. Also, herbal medicine is often used only for mild ailments. If the symptoms are more serious, it is best to consult a trained practitioner of herbal medicine who can tell you which ones are appropriate and recommend dosage levels and frequency.Presently, most of the recommended herbal medicines fall outside of standard drug regulations, thus, not all of theirclaims to fame are guaranteed and true. And even as common sense tells us that herbal medicine has been around forthousand of years, giving an impression that it is quite an authority, it is not recommended to self-diagnose.

Always keep in mind that herbal medicines are still medicines and, therefore, share the likelihood of having side effects as regular commercial drugs. Some of us have this misconception that because herbal medicines are natural, they are 100% safe. This is not true all the time. The best defense against the possible side effects herbal medicines might give is to educate ourselves with the basics on the herbal medicine in question and to use it with caution.

Garlic – My Favorite Healing Herb
Lee Dobbins
Garlic is a wonderful healing herb and, unlike many of theother herbs, it tastes great and can be incorporated into avariety of meals. Garlic has been used for over 5000 years as ahealing herb and has strong antibacterial, and antiviralproperties. But it’s health benefits extend well beyond it’sinfection fighting properties. It is also reputed to help lowercholesterol and blood pressure as well as help protect againstheart disease and stroke.

And the benefits of garlic don't stop there. A recent study hasshown that taking a garlic supplement once a day can reduce therisk of getting a cold by 50% and help you gain a speedyrecovery if you do happen to catch one. In fact, I tried thisout recently when I felt a sore throat coming on – I toasted apiece of bread and added some raw crushed garlic to it. It wasa bit pungent but I woke up the next day good as new! Asidefrom colds, garlic has historically been used as a remedy forinfections, athletes foot, worms, respiratory ailments, somecancers of the stomach, colic, ear aches, bladder problems andhigh blood pressure.

Garlic is jut plain good for you too! it is loaded withvitamins and minerals including Vitamin A, B and C, selenium, potassium, calcium, zinc and magnesium. But in order to reapthe benefits, you must prepare it in a certain way. Researchers say it is the allicin that is released when garlic is crushed. If you are trying to serve yourself a garlic herbal remedy byadding garlic to your foods then make sure you crush it a bitahead of time and don't add until the final 5 minutes ofcooking. This will give the allicin enough time to develop andwill insure you don't cook all the garlic health out of it.

Cooked garlic will not have as much benefit as raw and wholegarlic cloves have little benefit at all. Another way toincorporate garlic into your meals without cooking is to make agarlic bread where you crush the gloves into a paste and toastbread - butter the toasted bread and spread the garlic on it -Yum!

Garlic can have an affect on blood clotting, so don't starttaking supplements unless you discuss it with your physicianfirst especially if you are on blood thinning medication or dueto have surgery in the near future.
