Mesothelioma: Causes, Symptoms, Prevention and Lawsuits
David Arnold Livingston

What is Mesothelioma? Mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer that grows on the mesothelium, the membrane or protective sac that surrounds the various organs of the body. It guards the organs by producing a special type of fluid to promote mobility of the organs. In the case of the lungs, mesothelium fluid allows ease in the movement when taking in air. Mesothelioma tumor can start on any area of the mesothelium which can be benign or cancerous. Known to be the cause of Mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos.

Asbestos is a heat resistant fibrous mineral used in the industry as the main material in making roofing, gasket compounds, floor tiles and patching compounds. Its versatility makes it a component of various products in the market but it is extremely dangerous once inhaled no matter how small the quantity may be. Inhaled asbestos fiber can pass through the air passages which can come in contact with linings of the lungs which can injure the cells and result to pleural Mesothelioma. Swallowed asbestos on the other hand can affect the fibers lined up on the abdominal cavity resulting to peritoneal Mesothelioma. There are also evidences that link Mesothelioma with Thorotrast, a component used for X-rays but its usage has been stopped for a long time.

The symptoms and signs of Mesothelioma can be very common that is why the patient may just take it for granted. The symptoms may happen from two to three months before Mesothelioma is detected. Pleural Mesothelioma is the commonly occurring type which takes part in almost two thirds of the total detected Mesothelioma cases. The linings of the lungs and chest called pleura are the affected regions of Pleural Mesothelioma. Common signs are weight loss but not related with shift in diet, extreme tiredness, difficulty in swallowing, raspy or hoarse voice, constant shortness of breath, cough that have lasted for a long time, pain the chest or back, extreme sweating and recurring fever. For Peritoneal Mesothelioma, commonly affected organs of the body are bowel, liver and spleen with signs that are similar to bowel related diseases. Early symptoms include pain on the belly area, recurring constipation or diarrhea, increase in the waist area, nausea, vomiting, fever and even anemia. Anyone who encounters these symptoms that have been exposed to asbestos can better consult their doctor for diagnosis to prevent further Mesothelioma complicated problems.

Prevention of Mesothelioma can be best done by avoiding contact with asbestos which is proven to be its main causing agent. Asbestos is found almost everywhere may it be at home, at work or in any public buildings.Workers involved with it must take extra care and precautions to avoid contact through inhalation or swallowing. Low rates of Mesothelioma cases are detected for the past 20 years but nowadays, the number of affected individuals has been growing to a large degree. In United States almost 2,000 new cases are detected each year. It occurs mostly with men since they are commonly the ones involved in business and cases that involve the use of asbestos. Factory workers, miners, railroad laborers, gas mask makers, insulation workers and ship builders are the commonly asbestos related victims.

The patients or the individuals affected with Mesothelioma can file lawsuits against asbestos makers, manufacturers and employers since they have the duty to protect their workers from the negative effects of asbestos including Mesothelioma. Several law firms and lawyers are now available to help the sufferers fight for their right and to attain the justice that they deserve.

What is the Mesothelioma?
By: Andrew Mills

"Mesothelioma" is the term used to describe a cancerous tumor that involves the mesothelial cells of an organ. Mesothelial cells are cells that form a protective lining over the lungs, heart and abdominal organs. The most common type of mesothelioma is pleural mesothelioma. The pleura is a thin membrane found between the lungs and the chest cavity. It provides a lubricated surface so that the lungs do not rub and chafe against the chest walls.

What causes it?

Virtually all cases of mesothelioma are related to inhaling of asbestos fibers. There are about 3,000 cases per year (mostly men over the age of 40) and there will be about 300,000 cases before 2030. Mesothelioma usually spreads rapidly through the mesothelial cells to the heart and abdominal organs. The life span is typically 24 months after diagnosis, but it depends on what stage the cancer is detected, the health of the patient and other factors.

Although asbestos exposure causes mesothelioma, it has a latency period after exposure that could last 15 to 50 years. This means that someone who worked in a factory with asbestos 40 years ago could be developing mesothelioma now. Anyone who knows they were exposed to loose asbestos fibers should be tested regularly for mesothelioma.

Diagnosis
The onset of mesothelioma is usually very slow. The first symptom is a constant pain in the chest. This pain is later accompanies by difficulty breathing due to an accumulation of fluid in the chest. Other symptoms include coughing, fever and weight loss. Mesothelioma can be diagnosed by your doctor with a chest CT-scan.

Prognosis (the outcome)
Mesothelioma advances in 4 stages:Stage I - the tumor is limited to the area of the lining of the lung and usually limited to only one side of the chest.Stage II - the tumor extends to other organs within the chest cavity, such as the heart or lymph nodes in the chest.Stage III - the tumor expands to the other side of the chest or it spreads into the abdominal organs. The lymph nodes outside the chest are affected.Stage IV -the cancer spreads to different parts of the body far outside the chest area (liver, brain, bone, etc...).

Mesothelioma is an extremely deadly disease. The average survival time is about one year from date of diagnosis. About 20% of patients who find their cancer early and treat it aggressively will reach the five-year mark.

The Fuss About Hair Washing
By Darry J.Oswald

Children are especially difficult when it comes to bathing, what more when you have to wash their hair! Once your child is more comfortable in the bath, then you can start to introduce hair washing. I have left off washing my daughter’s hair for a while, until necessary, but she still goes mad. Cleansing involves washing and rinsing the hair.

Avoid vigorous drying with a towel after washing your hair, as this will remove essential moisture. About 50 to 100 hairs fall out each day, while you're washing your hair, brushing or combing it, or just sitting still. If any more than 100 hairs fall out a day, you may want to look into your diet, and reorganize the nutrients you take in. Black Soap helps oily skin, blemishes & more and has been used for centuries. Ghanaians have also used black soap for bathing and washing their hair.

Doctor Denis, the demon designer, is always ready to prescribe the Comfywash system to solve that portable hair washing problem! I have read that washing hair with warm/hot water can rob it of its nutrients. I have never read anything negative about washing hair with cold water. I've stopped washing my hair altogether. The rest of you I feel are simply intellectually curious enough to wonder what might happen when a man simply stops washing his hair. First I have to brush out my hair, tangled from three days of not washing. But do not attempt this unless you are used to dry cleaning your hair!

When you wash your hair with detergent or soap, the grease sticks to the detergent or soap and washes away with the water. If you do choose to wash your hair daily, make sure that you are using a pH-balanced shampoo and only wash it once. Also, the more frequently you can wash your hair in the first few weeks, the more quickly you'll finish your "detox". Standing upright reduces back strain while washing hair for the caregiver or hairdresser. Let your hair hang naturally while you wash it, either standing in the shower or with your head leaning over the bath. Preferably, the hair washing aid also includes a liquid supply container and a pump for delivery of liquid from the container to the nozzle. Magnesium content of hair was most affected by washing, containing less than half of the magnesium of the unwashed hair.

Half of All Breast Cancers are Tied to Pollution
By Brian Vaszily

Breast cancer rates in the United States have been on the rise since the 1940s. Today, one in seven women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime -- a rate triple the number in the 1960s.

What is behind this significant rising trend that has made breast cancer the most common cancer among U.S. women? Conventional medical literature states that age (over 65), family history and lifestyle factors (including not exercising, being obese and drinking a lot of alcohol) all affect the risk

But, says Nancy Evans, health science consultant for the Breast Cancer Fund and principle author of a new report "State of the Evidence," the cause of a large number of breast cancer cases remain unexplained.

"You just can't blame it on lifestyle factors, like when you have children, or if you have children," Evans said. "Half the cases are not explained by genetics or the so-called 'known risk factors.' There's something else going on."

50 Percent of Breast Cancer Cases Not Caused by Genetics, Lifestyle

The report, produced by the two groups Breast Cancer Fund and Breast Cancer Action, found that lifestyle factors and genetics were not involved in half of the breast cancer diagnoses in 2005. And with 211, 240 women diagnosed last year, this represents a hefty number -- and a grossly overlooked factor (or several of them).

After analyzing more than 350 studies on breast cancer, the researchers determined that only one in 10 breast cancer cases are due to genetics. The majority of cases arise, they say, from a combination of factors, including environmental pollution and exposure to low-dose radiation.

Why Plastics May Actually be Dangerous

Low-dose exposure to chemicals such as bisphenol-A (BPA) -- especially as a child -- may be having a profound effect on women.

Bisphenol-A is widely used in plastic containers, tin can and soda-can linings, baby bottles, children's toys and more. Close to 6 billion pounds are produced every year. However, studies find that it is far from an inert compound -- instead, it appears to be capable of altering cells.

One study, published in the journal Endocrinology, for instance, found that pregnant mice exposed to levels of the compound similar to what a human would typically be exposed to had alterations to the development of their mammary glands.

The mammary glands of their female offspring grew in a way that made them more susceptible to breast cancer development, and also responded unusually to estrogen, which promotes breast cancer in humans.

Further, due to the bisphenol-A exposure, the mice were less able to get rid of damaged cells that could be cancerous than mice that were not exposed.

"This is of tremendous concern because this is clearly a study that is relevant to human exposure levels to this chemical," said Professor Frederick vom Saal, of the University of Missouri-Columbia.

What does industry have to say of these findings? "When you look at this body of evidence in total, we didn't find any evidence that there is a marked, repeatable-across-laboratories effect that has any clear scientific standing," said Lorenz Romberg, a consultant and former U.S. Environmental Protection Agency scientist (who has testified before the government for the chemical industry).

Early Mammograms May Also Warrant Concern

The American Cancer Society recommends that women over the age of 40 get mammograms, despite the fact that research suggests they're not effective until age 50.

Now new research from the National Academy of Sciences suggests that even the lowest possible doses of radiation increase cancer risk.

"We have to have a replacement for mammography. It's so aggressively promoted, especially for young women," Evans said. "I'm not saying they should or shouldn't [have a mammogram]. They need to be aware of the risk. An additional 10 years of radiation is not insignificant."

It appears that a combination of factors is likely to blame for rising breast cancer rates. As of today, no one knows what happens when a person is exposed to low doses of chemicals, combined with low doses of radiation and other pollution.

Secondhand Smoke Officially a "Toxic Air Contaminant" in California

California regulators have recently ruled that secondhand smoke causes breast cancer in younger women. The first-of-its-kind ruling could lead to tougher measures to fight against smoking in the state.

The 1,200-page report from scientists at the California Environmental Protection Agency was unanimously approved by the state's Air Resources Board. It found that women under 50 who were exposed to secondhand smoke had an increased risk of breast cancer compared to those not exposed. State law in California will now list secondhand smoke as a "toxic air contaminant."

"There should be an even stronger effort to eliminate secondhand smoke exposure, particularly for our young girls," says Laura Esserman, a surgeon and researcher at the University of California-San Francisco. Aside from avoiding exposure to environmental toxins as much as possible, there are also dietary measures you can take to help prevent breast cancer -- including consuming plenty of these eight key nutrients.
Side Effects of Drugs
By Terje Ellingsen

All drugs has side effects. Some drugs makes you sleepy, others - like for example antidepressants - can give you a headache. Other remedies can make your heart beat fast. Why do drugs have side effects?

Our bodies are complex structures, built from chemicals and to function smoothly it has to be regulated. Chemicals like for instance hormones, enzymes and other molecular messengers normally make these adjustments. The purpose of medicines are often to take the place of one of the body regulating chemicals, because of a disease that has been brought out of balance and readjust this. And this is what any successful medicine or drug treatment actually does.

To understand why medicine produces side effects, we have to pay attention to the following:

1. Our body often uses the same chemical to regulate more than one process. What this means is that a medicine may retune not only the desired target but also others that don't need readjustment. Let's use prednisone as an example; this drug gets rid of inflammation, but it also causes thinning of bones.

2. Unfortunately, drugs are not always as selective as we would like them to be. A consequence of this is that the medicine may alter a number of unrelated processes at the same time. The antidepressant amitriptyline can help depression but it can also lower blood pressure by affecting norepinephrine receptors, cause blurred vision, dry mouth and constipation by blocking acetylcholine receptors and even induce sleepiness and weight gain by binding to histamine receptors.

3. It is also a fact that two people taking the same medicine can have very different experiences. One person may have severe or troublesome side effects that make the medicine intolerable (like nausea during the first weeks of taking Effexor), while another person hardly notice any side effects at all. This is the reason of the long list of possible side effects that is enclosed in the drug box.

Side effects may be rare or common, serious or simply annoying. Doctors are required to assess the risk of side effects versus the expected benefit of any medication. Statistically most doctors do a good job, so if you have a doctor you feel you can trust in general, there is no need for distrusting his or her abilities to figure out which medication is best for you.

Energize Yourself
QualityBooks.com

Energy starts with a good night's sleep. If you don't get the rest you need you'll never have any energy.

For a lasting energy, snack on protein foods like skinless poultry, fish and pasta.

Avoid sugar type snacks.

A coke, a cup of coffee or other beverages with caffeine will give you a quick temporary boost of energy but if you take too much you will feel worse later on when the caffeine wears off.

Since sleep is a source of energy be sure to avoid alcohol or caffeine close to bed time to assure you of a better quality of sleep.

If it is possible, take a short nap in early afternoon. You will be surprised at how well you will feel, often better than when you first get up in the morning.

To sleep better, don't go to bed until you are ready. Try to get up a little earlier each morning until you get tired enough at night to go to sleep at a reasonable hour.

Keep your work and your hobbies out of the bedroom. Use that room to rest, relax and sleep.

Never lay in bed if you cannot sleep. Get up and do something that usually makes you drowsy. Go back to bed only when you can no longer keep your eyes open.

For a good night's sleep have milk and crackers. You have heard this for years and it still works well.

There are two ways that I personally use to recharge. That is to take a cold shower and then sit down with a tall glass of lemonade. This works well if you live in a hot climate or during the summer months in northern cities.

Every day keep a record of the things or foods that seem to give your body a charge and when you need to refresh, you repeat those methods or eat to give you the energy you need.
